Greetings! It’s been a while.
I’ve been taking another stab at custom hair care for myself.
It started with persistent ads for Prose and other custom shampoo and conditioner brands. The cost of these products is astronomical. Thankfully, I’ve found that over the last few years, a number of business have started selling the necessary ingredients in small volumes – perfect for the small batch maker. For the same amount I paid for my first and only Prose order, I could purchase most of the same ingredients – the exception being that instead of the four 5-8 oz bottles of product, I could have a year or more supply of them.
The trick is knowing how to create the product from the supplies. Cue Humblebee & Me.
Marie Rayma has developed an awesome site that provides detailed instructions for creating a vast number of products, formulations for a wide range of products, educational material about individual ingredients, and links to the sources of those ingredients. I’ve got lost in these pages more than a few times, and I’ve bought enough ingredients to start some experimentaion of my own. My goal is to reverse engineer some of my favorite high priced products, and perhaps develop a few, too.
Because of my soap making habit, I have most of the necessary equipment. If I didn’t have the equipment already, this would be a pricy proposition. I’ll follow up with future posts concerning my progress. In the mean time, Cheers!
